The response I got was: if World Athletics calls it a championship, it\u2019s a championship. Fair enough \u2014 that\u2019s . not an argument you settle in 280 characters. So here\u2019s the longer version.<\/p>\n

My Position<\/b><\/p>\n

The World Athletics Ultimate Championship may be an outstanding event, but I don\u2019t view it as a championship in the traditional sense. It\u2019s a highly selective, limited-field global invitational: a made-for-television season finale built around elite athletes, short sessions, curated disciplines, and unprecedented prize money.<\/p>\n

World Athletics has every right to market it as a championship. But its structure differs sharply from the World Athletics Championships, the Olympic Games, and continental championships. It sits outside the World Athletics Series, uses a curated entry system rather than open qualifying standards, omits major disciplines, and gives out trophies instead of medals. There\u2019s no podium – just winners and everyone else. In my view, those differences matter.<\/p>\n

How It\u2019s Actually Structured<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2022 Invitation-only entry. Automatic invites go to the most recent Olympic champions, World champions, and Diamond League Final winners. Remaining spots are filled strictly by World Rankings position – there\u2019s no qualification standard an athlete can hit independently of being invited.<\/p>\n
