The CHill Zone of T&F: Conway's View From the Finish Line

Big Weekend of Invitational/Relay Meets Online

Apr 5th, 2012
10:37 am PDT

Sprint StartNow that we’re outdoors expect this year to go whizzing by. June will be Championships month – NCAA, High Schools and assorted National Olympic Trials. July will be European Circuit month replete with the heart of the Diamond League. Then finally August will be Olympics month, dominated of course by the London Games.

Before we get there, however, we have to get through April and May, and this month is Relays/Invitational month. Things opened up nicely with the Texas Relays last week and should get even hotter this weekend with several more meets on tap headlined by the Florida Relays, Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational, and the Stanford Invitational – all of which will be streamed live over the Internet!

The Florida Relays, like the Texas Relays, usually has a lot of speed on display and this year will fit that mode. On the women’s side scheduled to compete are Simone Facey (JAM, 100), frosh sensation Octavious Freeman (UCF, 100), Gabby Mayo (USA, 200), Aileen Bailey (JAM, 200), and Mary Wineberg (USA, 400). There will be plenty of speed on the men’s side as well with Jeff Demps (UFL), Travis Padgett (USA) and high school sensation Marvin Bracy all scheduled to compete in the 100 meters. But the event that could steal the headlines is the men’s 110 hurdles with a field that includes Ronnie Ash (13.19), Johnny Dutch (13.46), Dexter Faulk (13.13), Antwon Hicks (13.09), David Payne (13.02), and David Oliver (12.89). That’s a quality field in any setting! Full information on the meet can be found here, including heat sheets and live results link. An added treat will be a live webcast provided by RunnerSpace.

Where the Florida Relays are known for speed the Stanford Invitational is known for some outstanding distance races. It was at Stanford two years ago that Chris Solinsky (USA) became the first American to run under 27:00 in the 10,000 meters when he cranked out a 26:59.60 victory in Palo Alto. Another solid group of distance runners is set to run this year including: Jenn Rhines (USA, 5000), Sara Vaughn (USA, 5,000), Shannon Rowbury (USA, 800), Dathan Ritzenhein (USA, 10,000), Josh McAdams (USA, Steeple), Alistair Cragg (IRL, 1500), and Lawi Lalang (KEN, 1500). Expect some good results as Palo Alto always has good distance running weather.

I also noticed while scanning through the heat sheets that Bryan Clay (USA) is scheduled to run the 110 hurdles, so we should get a glimpse of the health of Mr. Clay. If he’s healthy the US could have one of the most formidable decathlon trios in history with Clay, Tree Hardee, and Ashton Eaton. Full information on the Stanford Invitational can be found here including heat sheets and live results link. And for those that would like to watch but can’t attend, FloTrack will be providing live meet coverage.

Florida features speed, Stanford features distance, and Oregon will be highlighting some of the top collegiate teams in the country as Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA, and Washington get together for one of the country’s top quadrangular meets. Look for a fierce competition between the women of Oregon and Texas A&M as both squads should be battling for the NCAA title later this spring. This meet could provide an early preview as both squads will want to gain a bit of a psychological advantage. Both teams have their strengths, but look for a head to head showdown between English Gardner (ORE) & Dominque Duncan (TxAM) in the 200 and their relay matchups for some great head to head action.

The two time defending national champion Aggie men could dominate the meet – especially in the sprints and hurdles- but keep an eye on the 400 meters as Michael Berry (ORE) looks to take down the vaunted Texas A&M sprint forces and the 110 hurdles where freshman Jonathon Cabral ORE) could pull off an upset. Full information on the Oregon Team Invitational can be found here including heat sheets and live results link. And as with the Florida Relays, RunnerSpace will be providing live coverage of the meet.

Finally for those that enjoy great high school competition, the Arcadia Invitational will also be on tap this weekend – featuring the best California has to offer along with a mix of top of the line talent from states across the country. It too is offering a live feed courtesy of RunnerSpace. If you’re a track junkie like me, there’s no better way to spend a weekend that with a computer or tablet and some great meets on the Internet! I’m sure there will be lots to talk about before the weekend is over.

Will Marvin Bracy Be the Next Olympic Prep?

It’s rare that high school athletes are able to compete in the Olympic Trials, let alone the Olympic Games. While the Games in it’s infancy was able to produce a Bob Mathias – high school decathlon gold medalist in London (1948). Today’s Olympics are a “professional” affair dominated by athletes that train year round and get paid to do so Read More...

Richards Ross Highlights Weekend of Speed

Apr 2nd, 2012
9:22 am PDT

Speed was on display this past weekend and nowhere was it more prominent than the speedy state of Texas and the annual Texas Relays. The first sign that things were going to be fast came in the qualifying rounds of the University 4x1 when Auburn scorched the track for a 38.95 in their heat. That’s the kind of time one expects to see collegiate teams run in the semis or final of the NCAA Championships, not an opening round of the Texas Relays – one of the first runs for college teams of the season Read More...

No Deuce for Tyson Gay in London

Mar 31st, 2012
8:30 am PDT

That’s the word from Tyson in an interview with ESPN. In the interview Gay states that he’s had a few nagging injuries that have slowed his preparation for the Olympic season. He said that the injury that forced him to have surgery last year is fully healed, but some muscle strains and inflammation have twice halted his training Read More...

2012 Outdoor Preview – Hurdles

Mar 28th, 2012
3:37 pm PDT

If you like speed and competition then you must like the hurdles. Unlike the pure sprinters, who seem to avoid each other as much as possible until forced to toe the line for championships, the hurdlers compete often and face each other with regularity. The sprinters tend to get more publicity but of the four hurdle events three of them have legitimate shots at having WR’s broken – two by more than one individual Read More...

Memories of the Games – Paula Ivan

Mar 27th, 2012
12:17 pm PDT

Before I take a look at the hurdles events for 2012, I want to go back to the middle distances for a moment. Because as I was looking at this year’s women’s 1500, visions of one of the most gutsy performances in Olympic history were running through my mind. I’m actually a big fan of the mile/1500 meters, I grew up during the era of Jim Ryun, Kip Keino, Ben Jipcho, John Walker, and Filbert Bayi – milers that ran fast and competed strongly Read More...

The Outdoor Season Kicks it Up a Notch

Mar 25th, 2012
6:06 pm PDT

It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were talking about the Indoor World Championships, yet here we are in the month of March and we have our first “sub” of the season! Sub meaning a mark under a typically accepted elite threshold – like a sub-10 100 for men, sub-4:00 1500 for women, or a sub 27:00 10,000 for men Read More...

2012 Outdoor Preview – Middle Distances

Mar 24th, 2012
9:18 am PDT

The middle distance events (800 / 1500) should be very interesting this year. There is the potential of a world record, some very competitive women’s events, and the potential for a sweep. Above all, however, I expect them to be very exciting, both during the season as well as in the Games themselves, as middle distance competitors tend to compete fairly often and we should see some solid matchups outside the Games, as opposed to the sprints where we may see only one loaded race all season Read More...

2012 Outdoor Preview – Sprints

Mar 22nd, 2012
11:32 am PDT

Now that we’re completely done with the indoor season, it’s time to start taking a look at how this outdoor season might possibly shape up. More importantly, at how the Games might shape up. So as I go through the various events on the Olympic slate, I’m going to try and Identify those individuals that I feel as of today ill be in the mix – the contenders and potential contenders Read More...

Here’s What Everyone is Trying to Achieve

Mar 20th, 2012
10:26 am PDT

It’s time to start laying out the upcoming Olympic season – who I feel the contenders are as we start the road to London. Before I do that however, I thought it might help if we knew what everyone was gunning for. Ultimately the goal is gold, as in gold medals in London. Short of gold everyone would like to pick up some sort of medal – silver or bronze Read More...
